Google is gearing up to make an imminent debut in the world of wearable technology, sources claim, with Google Now support reputedly set to be front and centre as the search giant bids to differentiate its smartwatch from rivals’ offerings.
According to folks “familiar with matters” cited by the Wall Street Journal, Google is negotiating with suppliers in Asia with a view to start mass production of the Nexus-branded smartwatch soon, suggesting that the device could be little more than a few months away.
The insiders also claim that the Siri-alike personal assistant Google Now, which heavily features in Google Glass too, is at the heart of the smartwatch.
The application uses GPS location information and learns users’ habits to serve up germane information that it predicts will be helpful. For instance, it might alert you to relevant travel updates while you’re dressing for work.
Like other smartwatches, it’s designed to be paired with smartphones and will allow owners to access some of their handsets’ key functions.
But unlike some competitors, though, it ought to be able to last a day, given that Google has reportedly been spending time “working to reduce power consumption on the smartwatch so it won’t require frequent battery charge”.
Talk of a Google smartwatch comes amid the rather chilly reception given to Samsung’s Galaxy Gear, which is reportedly being returned by one in three buyers at Best Buy stores in the US and singularly failed to light tech scribes’ fire.
Apple’s smartwatch, which patent filings indicate will be dubbed the iWatch, isn’t expected until next year.
